Why are my cucumbers long and thin?
Question:
Answers:
Did you perhaps plant Armenian cucumbers? They taste much better than the usual ones and are long and thin.
"The Armenian cucumber, Cucumis melo var. flexuosus, is a type of long, slender fruit which tastes like a cucumber and looks somewhat like a cucumber inside. It is actually a variety of melon (C. melo) closest relative to the cucumber (C. sativus). It is also known as the yard-long cucumber, snake cucumber, snake melon, and uri. It should not be confused with the snake gourds (Trichosanthes spp.). The skin is very thin, light green, and bumpless. It has no bitterness and the fruit is almost always used without peeling.
Not enough water?
Its the variety of the cucumbers you planted not the watering or environmental factors
The shape of your cucumbers is determined by the kind that you planted. Some cucumber varieties are long and thin, and some are almost round and yellow, like apples. If you still have your seed package or the label from your seedling tray, you could search the name to find out more about what to expect. But if not, wait until they get about 1 and 1/2 inches to 2 inches wide and try one to see how it tastes. If it's sweet, it's ready to eat.
My cucumbers have been unusually long too. I've got one that is 14 inches long. I bought the plants at either Walmart or Lowe's (not a lot of choices there) and I'm pretty sure I bought slicing cucumbers (burpless), not pickling cucumbers. I haven't grown cucumbers in several years - maybe it's a new variety.
It's been dry here too - I live in GA., but I don't think it had anything to do with how I watered.
I just cut the 14 in. cucumber in the middle. The seeds were very immature - I could've let it grow more, but it tasted OK, so I'll be making a cucumber salad out of that one cucumber!
