Answers:
Mounds small piles of dirt about 4 - 6" high are highly reccomended especially for a first time grower. Good news Watermelon is easy. very very easy. You can grow watermelon in nearly any kind of soil suggest you stear away from clay and other than that they are simple. Don't over water this is true and not simply for the reasons stated water melon is very prone to damping off (root rott) it is an african plant (from Tunisia) and grew wild in the deserts, newer varieties like crimson are going to do better than wild strains but it has a genetic weakness
Crimson is a great variety and one of the most common for commercial production If you live in the U.S. you have probably enjoyed them in the past. Has a nice crisp flesh with a quality sweetness.
Plant them 1" deep in hills. Once they start to grow cut way back on watering them or you'll have mush melons. These are one of the sweetest melons.
They do not have to be planted on hill. My dad is also growing them, and he says no hill is necessary. His Crimson's are doing great without hills! He is from the south and has a bit of knowledge when it comes to growing watermelons . 60+ years worth of knowledge! His are growing in soil that is not great, but well drained. Water, not too much, especially when it begins producing fruit. I am growing my first watermelon this year too. I have been following his instruction and even though my plant does not look as healthy as his ... it's still growing! We both live in zone 5/6.
