How do I get rid of inchworms?
Question:I live in New England (Boston area to be exact). I have a huge tree in my yard (Broad leaf tree, possibly an Elm?). I am having a problem with inchworms (caterpillars) eating the leaves and pooping all over the cars under it. Is there any non-pesticide options for getting rid of them? This tree is very tall and getting to the top would be a bit of a challenge, but it can be done if there is a good solution.
I would prefer not to kill the little guys, just make them move to another tree...
Are there any options for this, something non-chemical.
Thank you!
Answers:
Here's a non-chemical treatment that should allow the worms to live (as you suggested) and prevent damage to your trees;
Since females must climb to lay their eggs in the crowns of trees, I would suggest that you place a 6 to 8 inch-wide smooth metal band (tin or copper) completely around it. (You'll need to insure that it fits snugly around and you may need to use some caulk so the worms won't go under) This should prevent the worms from climbing. Make sure you band your trees before the cankerworm moths lay their eggs, this will prevent the cankerworms from eating your trees later.
To control the Spring Cankerworm, you must have your bands on the trees by March 15th and do this again in September to control the Fall Cankerworm.
To control the Fall Cankerworm, you must have your bands on the trees by the end of September or before the first hard frost making sure to keep bands on over the winter months and then re-applying in the spring.
GOOD LUCK!
