What types of plants can I plant on a hill to keep the hill from washing when it rains?
Question:I am specifically looking for plants that will not attract bees. These plants will be planted on a hill that overlooks a swimming pool. It is full sun.
Answers:
I would suggest Lupinus arboreus (tree lupin) which is like a regular garden lupin but more shrubby and does not die down in winter. it is great because it can send its roots down as much as 20 FEET!..and is often used to stabilise sand dunes. it won't attract bees any more than any other flower, but you can always cut off the flower spikes when they form too.
if you really don't want a flowering plant, try mesembryanthemum crystallinum (ice plant) which looks cool and only has tiny flowers. it's succulent, grows well in exposed locations and will stabilise ground through its spreading action. other spreading succulents also work (e.g. caprobrotus edulis, dorotheanthus, delosperma, sempervivum) and won't attract bees. however, i really like mesembryanthemum crystallinum as its leaves are covered in bladder shaped hairs which glisten in the sun and make the whole plant look like it's covered in a layer of frost.
Grass of the type that is native to your area is usually both the easiest and best.
Ice plants work Very well!
Low growing junipers work well. They spread quite a bit and will help stabilize the soil.
Stone, 2"-4" diamter stone. Put down a geotextile mat and then 4" or so of stone.
Plants take time to establish roots, about a year and the several more to develop sufficient root system to stabilize bank soil. And, any plnat with a flower will attract bees.
There's also the the problem with weeds, disease..
Just stone it.
