Growing potatoes?
Question:I threw some potatoes I had in the kitchen in a small compost pile outside now thier growing, if they produce are they safe to eat?
Answers:
Yes, no matter how funky your compost is (NO dog or cat do-do). But you should cover the sprouts with more dirt as they grow. Keep it up until fall. If you don't, the potatoes will be green - really bad news as green potatoes are poisonous. That goes for the ones you buy from the store too, all green has to be cut away. Farm stand regs.
Sure. Unless you put something really funky in your compost pile.
They have received enough moisture to sprout,,,,,,,,,,,,,I don't think they would be left alone long enough to grow more potatoes from them..Just stir them into you compost...
yes but i would transplant them now..while they are small..unless you plan on not using that compost pile..once they are vined out..they will be impossible to use the compost there..or you will have potatoes overtaking whereever you use the compost..
sure they would be safe to eat, however do you have the stomach to dig them out of the garbage and eat them? Are they transplantable (maybe bring some of the good soil with them and try to transplant one and see if you can do that).
