Most have a handle attached to a cable or rope that is wound around a pulley within the saw. First turn the ON switch, then firmly hold the chainsaw with one hand and pull the handle away with force which turns the pulley and starts the chainsaw. Some newer and nicer chainsaws have electric starters, so you turn it on and press a button.
