Question on mulching?
Question:Hi, I was wondering what are the correct techniques for mulching and what kinds of mulch you would recommend?
Answers:
A couple of additional comments not previously mentioned. The shreaded mulches will decompose more quickly and provide nutrients for the soil; but will only last 1-2 years. Shreaded mulches are also a bit less suseptable to washing out or blowing away. The chipped mulches will not decompose as quickly and will last up to about 3 years; so they require a bit less up-keep. One final comment is that landscape fabric isn't required or even often recommended under the mulch as long as a good thick base of 3" (as a previous posted mentioned) is used. The fabric may aid in reducing the weeds, but won't let the decomposing mulch nurish your soil.
Mulch at least to a depth of 3-4 inches--this will help keep weeds down and will help regulate moisture levels. Do not let the mulch touch stems or branches of plants, as this may lead to diseases and/or rot. The kind of mulch is personal preference. I use cedar/cypress as this also helps with repeling insects.
