What kind of potted plants - only allowed outdoors/pets.?

Question:I have an outdoor deck where I can store plants, either in planters or in hanging pots. I would love to get some plants to put out there. Only problem is, I have cats. I would not be able to bring the plants indoors in the fall/winter months because they'd either eat the plants (and those might be toxic) Or knock them over and create a dirty mess.

What kind of plants can I get for outdoors on a deck that go dormant in cold months and that would reflower/regrow when the weather turned warm again? I really don't want to have to buy new plants every year just to enjoy them.

Answers:
we have cactuses that are outdoors year around and we get very cold winters and they always regrow in the spring, they are totally maintenance free, dont have to water them or anything. and some of them grow very pretty yellow and red buds out of them. we have a big planter on the outdoor deck and none of the animals mess with it at all.

I would go to your local plant nursery and tell them of your predicament. You may want to lean more towards bulb plants, which will come up in the spring and die out, but return the next year. Or, you may look at evergreens, like small firs and their relatives. If it's flowers you want, go for the bulbs. They come back forever.think daffodils, lillies, etc.
I would definately go with impatients then they go dormant in winter and reflower in the spring . good luck and I hope I helped.
It depends on your area and what zone you're in, but your local nursery can help you pick out some perennials that will bloom nicely outdoors in the spring/summer/fall and go dormant during wintertime and then re-bloom next year after they "wake up".
I would use snapdragons, they reseed themselve and you can once they dry out take out the seeds and repot them.
