Answers:
When the vine dies away form the melon and the while color under the melon starts to turn a little grean

How about when they look like they are ripening ?
When her speech is slurred.
thump it. if it sounds hollow it is ripe
when they're big and look ripe, thump them and listen for a solid sound
The vine will start to dye of when you pick them leave the little knob on it where the vine joins to it as this will keep it from going off as quick its about an inch long and won't dye of like the rest of the vine home grown don't seem to get as big as the shops and it has a green ripe look to it.hope this helps mine was beauitful.
You will notice that the vine that is attached to the melons will slowly turn brown. Once you see this, then pick them.
Also melons, which I use the 'thump method" in combination with lifting the melon up gently..look at the discolored area on the bottom..when it goes from white to yellow..it is ripe..this may very well cover the whole bottom of the melon...check out my baby melons and garden on my flickr photos below..page 11...garden pc 003..
