What can I do/use to keep snakes away?

Question:I live in the country and have a field beside & behind my home.
We have had numerous snakes come up in the yard. Today, right beside the patio in back. It is now under my house.
We have small children and I'm afraid for them to play in the yard now. I'm not talking about green snakes or chicken snakes, or corn snakes. I'm talking rattle snakes, water mocasins from the creek and others. Can someone PLEASE help me? If we've seen these...how many are here that we haven't seen? How many are under my house? Can they get into duct work? What do I do?
Move you say? Thought seriously about that. It's not an option at this time.
I have to stay..I want the snakes to GO!
PLEASE HELP ME!

Dixie, girl I feel you. I am in NC too and have killed 13 snakes so far this year. I gave up a flower bed to "mr. no-shoulders", but then decided, he's not paying the mortgage, he's got to go! Spread sulfur around your yard, under your house . Or call Termidor.

Great advice to the guy or girl above me! Peacocks will also kill snakes.

Hire Samuel L Jackson.
Be careful, if you use a snake repellent and the snakes are now around your house, they may not be able to leave! I would seriously consider leaving now! Best of luck---
When we lived in Texas, my mom spread moth balls around the perimeter of the yard...it seemed to work pretty well, though I'm not sure why.

Will Anything Keep Snakes Out Of Yards? 6/18/01Is there anything that will keep snakes away? To keep snakes from being attracted to your garage or house – particularly during dry periods – another good practice is to have gravel, rather than dense vegetation next to all buildings and to seal all cracks and openings. They can and will come in the house expecially rattlesnakes.

I would call someone to get rid of them.

There is a product called snake a way but I couldn't tell you whether it works or not.
I answered the mosquito question suggesting to use the cedarside. This can also help with snakes, rats, fleas or almost any small rodents. I have also heard you can plant a line of giant sunflowers and the repel snakes and rodents. In case you didn't read the mosquito question you can get the cedarside at almost any garden center or feed store.
there are products that you can buy i don't know the name and there should be a company that specialize in getting rid of snakes try stores like home depot or lowes
You know there are animals that will kill snakes. pigs are one of them. You could get a couple of potbellied pigs and let them lose. They are not afraid of snakes nor do they like them. Any pig will kill a snake but I prefer potbellied ones. This will definately get rid of your snake problem. Good Luck
Moth balls or moth crystals work very well. They do smell but if you make a border of it around your home it will work. Snakes don't like the odor. Lived in the country for many yrs. Good luck
You don't want to move? I suggest you move in some cats and chickens in the backyard. Cats have to roam in and out side the house, feed them and let them outside. Chickens, you have to let out. I really don't know the housing situation, but this is a good way to keep snakes away.
Here in Texas, Snake Away is a really popular choice. It is a combination of Naphthalene (Old Fashioned moth balls) and wettable dusting sulfur. I don't know how well it works, but we sell a lot of it.

The most important thing you can do is get rid of hiding places close to your house and wherever your children play. Get rid of ground covers and dense plantings around your house, wood piles, anyplace the critters could hide. If you have a doggie door I suggest you close it off. Snakes look for a place to stay cool and hide out during the summer. They can only get into your duct work if there is a hole in it somewhere.

You might try an exterminator to check under your house and give you a little peace of mind.
where r you @ damn mocasins
