What is the purpose of a retaining pond? I guess that is what it is called...near large stores/parking lots...

Question:There will be a giant man made pond looking area with a fence around it near big stores/parking lots. What purpose do these serve? The seem like a perfect area for vermin/mosquitos to breed...

Answers:
Karl pretty well nailed this one but I would like to add that a lot of oil and other crap from those parking lots are getting into nearby wells. RScott

i dont really the purpose of the designer why. in general ponds, water fountains are used to give a cooling effect to the place. for one 1CC of water evapurated is absorbs like 100cal (or so) of heat.

fresh water fishes are placed into this ponds so that mosquitos would not breed in it.
They are exactly what you just called them - retention ponds. They serve the purpose of retaining storm water runoff from the parking lot and building. This prevents lakes and rivers, etc. from flooding and it also allows the water to seep back into the ground to replenish the water table instead of washing downstream.

Retention ponds are becoming more popular as we try to make up for the lack of them built in previous years. They are essential to protecting the environment and replenishing our water table.
