How can I tell what I planted from weeds?
Question:I planted cantelope, honeydew, watermelon and pumpkin seeds and I think they are growing but they aren't in the straight lines I planted them in. The ones I think are the melons are about 4" tall with 2 branches coming off the main trunk.

That sounds like a good guess to me. Some times when you water too much in very dry ground you can disturb the newly planted seed and it will spring up every were.
Just let all the flat broad leaf stuff grow and pull the grasses and obvious weeds. As the season progressed the vines will form and yellow blossoms will come. Then you can go back in and clean out the worst of the weeds!
They don't stay in a straight line they go everywhere. The runners can be moved to keep them going in the same general direction. If you are still having problems ID ing the plants you can get pictures of the plants on-line.
when we plant a garden, we place the empty package on a stick at the end of the row. this serves 2 purposes, so you know what you planted in each row and you guessed it ! to help the kids identify the plant from the weeds. sorry this advice is a little to late but look your plants up on line and print out the pics so you know for sure !
By now you should be able to tell them apart from the surrounding weeds. The leaves are larger and more serrate.
Everything you planted are vine growers. There are two leaves that look almost like large teardrops that come out first on the stem, these are the starter leaves. The next leaves you'll see on those plants, will be more like wide waterlily type leaves. You don't have to be as concerned with weeding as you would with a flower bed. Weeding is still important , However two to three times a week is more than enough for these plants. Good Luck.
