Do you have a green thumb? How do I care for big house plants if I do no know what kind they are?
Question:My grandmother passed away and I recently took in her house plants. Unfortunately, I do not know what kind of plants they are. There are three huge plants with big green leaves aboiut twice the size of the average hand. The only thing I know is they require lots of light. My apartment does not get a lot of light and I am worried they will parish. I've seen both of my grandparents dust off the leaves and water them but I am unsure of how much. I know I am not giving much info but any advise you might have would be greatly appreciated. This is only thing I have to remember my Grandmother by and it makes me feel close to her again just to have the plants that she gave so much love. Thanks.

kuddles, I would like to offer my condolences, and can understand your desire to maintain these sentimental keepsakes. I would suggest that you purchase a book, devoted solely to houseplants. It will be invaluable, and help you to identify the plants, and give you the expert advice on keeping these plants healthy and thriving. I have many books, and my favorites have become dog eared over the years. I use them constantly to this day. Many years ago, I purchased a few books when I became interested in gardening. These books have served me well. My favorite are published by Ortho Books, and are relatively inexpensive. You will not be sorry. I also have kept journals, placed post-its on pages I frequently revisit, and make notes on the inside flaps. If you buy just one good book, you will be able to learn a great deal, and take a lot of guessing and stressing out of your houseplant experience. Good Luck, and best wishes.
I'm so sorry to hear about you grandmother and I'm sure she is happy that you are taking care of her plants. The problem is that we also have no way of really helping you without knowing what the plants are. However, on a good note, most indoor plants only require indirect light and a weekly watering.The only suggestion I have is to water them once a week and then start looking around at garden centers like Wal-mart and Lowes to see if you can identify the plants. Both of these places carry a large selection of indoor plants so you might get lucky. I hope you find them.
Take pictures of them and take them to the garden center, they will help you.
