Usually from under watering, disease, no fertilization or fungal infestation. At this time of year, being frozen is not a option. Take a few leaves in a ziploc to a nursery for a diagnosis.
Scratch the trunk. If it is green it is alive, but if brown it is dead.

Sounds like it got too much water. Yellow is a pretty good indication of too much water where as brown is a sign of not enough water.
