Need ideas for building a dog run for a new Rat Terrier pup.?

Question:I have an area between my garage and neighbors fence that is about 6' wide and 20' deep. It's shaded all day by several Norway Spruces. The only thing I have back there now is a small woodshed built on the side of the garage. I want to put in a doggie door into the side of the garage so he can go in there whenever he wants. I need other ideas of how to make it a place he will enjoy. Woodchip surface or gravel ? Just need general ideas.

I would suggest cement, since it is easy to spray clean with a hose. Getting dog poop out of wood chips or gravel is a mess!! If you are concerned about the hard surface, cover part of the cement with carpet tiles (do not glue them down). They can also be sprayed clean and/or thrown away if they get too rank!!

Rat terriers need lots of attention, so make sure that he has some toys to play with. Be sure to walk him morning and night!!
