Ryegrass...how does it spread?

Question:Doesn't grow on runners does it?

Answers:
Perennial Ryegrass (Lolium perenne) is a bunch-type grass. Bunch-type grasses grow in a bunch or clump. They spread through the slow outward growth of the clump (much like the way a perennial flower spreads). It does NOT have runners (stolons or rhizomes).

Annual Ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum) spreads by seed.

all it takes it rain to fall on it !!
once the grass reaches it's peak you will see the small seeds at the top with a little wind the seeds travel, they dont have to be covered to grow and by late spring/early summer the grass is toast
There are two types of rye grass. One is annual, it doesn't spread, (it's also called Italian ryegrass and common ryegrass). The grass is coarse with leaves far apart. It does not make a tight knit lawn. It's used for quick lawn cover until another seed, simultaneously planted takes root and grows, such as centipede or zoysia or St Augustine.
The other type is a perennial type created by selective breeding. It has a fine leaf resembling bluegrass. This ryegrass is actually tough enough for play grounds. It produces seed which grows the following season - similar to certain flowers like zinnia, which re-seeds each year.

Hope this helps!
