So many Gnats!?
Question:Recently I've repotted a fairly large fern that we keep in our bedroom. And within the last week, we've had TONS of gnats all through my bedroom, in my sheets, flying around, and my windowsill is covered with all these teeny tiny black gnats. I know where they came from, but I don't know how to get rid of them. I know they've been nesting in my potting soil, and making eggs, so how do i get rid of them without harming my plant?
Answers:
You can do two simple things to eliminate your problem;
Drench your soil with a weak mixture of dishsoap and water to kill the gnat larvae.the soap will destroy the chitin (outer layer of skin) of the insect, where they'll eventually dry up and die. (OR you can purchase some Insecticidal Soap instead)
Place a 1/4 inch layer of sand over the entire surface of the soil. This will prevent further egg-laying of the adults directly onto the wet soil-media.
You should see a reduction in populations within a few days.
As for the gnats flying around your home... you'll have to start whacking away with a fly-swatter or spray them.
GOOD LUCK!
spray the plant with an insect killer such as bug-b-gon!
