They mean whatever you want them to . If you want the "official" version(s) check Teleflora & FTD websites
It varies by author . ( Whole thing is a bunch of bs IMO , & probably of most in the biz . Have to keep up the myth though . Bamboozle the uniitiated ;D Kinda like doctors do.)

Other lists will say "Friendship " Another yet " Affection ". =) ) Re: my answer: Had a gf. that loved yellow roses above all others ., so gave her yellow when possible . So to her yellow = red( by list meaning ) . Had a friend that felt the same about orange . Got all wobbly at the sight of orange roses , so give her orange & to her "orange" = ( from me , anyway ) "Yellow/friendship" (+ little "Red" ;D) > So you see in reality , " It all depends"
As Jason indicated (wise dude!) , if it's somebody you don't know well , avoid red ( unless THAT, is what you want to say ) .
I don't know all that much, really, but:
red: love
yellow: friendship
If you look around, you'll probably find more answers.
I give roses other than red to females who i'm just friends with.They look nice but are not so straight forwards as regular red roses
