Why does moss grow on the north side of trees?

Moss will grow anywhere on a tree where it doesn't recieve much sunlight. (look it up)

beacuse it's less sunny on the north side (my north sided garden is really mossy) - but moss will grow on all sides of a tree just moreso on the north!
