What is the best humane way to rid my lawn of moles?
Question:
Answers:
Trapping, grub control, poison gases and baits, direct removal, predators, barriers, and ultrasonic devises have all been considered as control measures.
Sound...little sonar units made just to get rid of moles are available...
We would flush em' out with the hose, and the dog (Jack Russel Terrior) would chase em' down. He would get about 5 or so on a good day.
Throw mole treats into your neighbors yard and they'll all move over there
Try a chemical for your lawn that is sold in garden stores. It kills the grubs in your soil that the moles want to eat. No grubs-no moles!
There are granule products you can buy at lawn and garden stores. It is a worm, grub, insect killer. You must apply in the spring or fall i think. It is supposed to kill everything moles eat and they will move on to someone else's lawn.
A windmill on a stick, the noise drives 'em mad.
Moth balls down their holes.
Etc.
Get a 12 bore, and blow their bloody 'eads off
We had fairly good luck in my Mother's yard by opening the tunnels and placing some of the clumps from her cat's box in them. I've also heard the spearmint gum placed in the tunnels will mess up their innards and kill them, but that's not very humane.
First of all, make sure that they are moles or voles. Moles and voles tunnel and are very close to the surface. They rarely leave mounds of dirt anywhere along their trail.
Second, maybe you don't need to get rid of them. Unless they are really ruining your lawn, just stomp down their tunnels and water. Moles eat lawn grubs and other harmful insects. They don't usually eat plant roots. And, as they tunnel, the aerate the soil, very beneficial for thick, gummy, clay soils.
If, on the other hand, you have little mounds of dirt here and there with little evidence of surface tunneling, you probably have pocket gophers - nasty little beasts to get rid of. See other posts on this site for suggested remedies.
