The height of your lawn mower can affect your grass' health too. When it's dry and hot, raise your deck up an inch higher then usual so your lawn can retain it's water better. Also, you may have to water it when you've gone through a dry spell. It's best to water in the evening rather then morning in dry times since the sun and heat of the day will evaporate the water from it. If you can't nurse it back, I would run an aerator over it and spread some new seed. Be sure that whatever seed you choose to buy is hardy to your zone, and drought tolerant so you won't have to go through that again. Also, Do not fertilize when it's in shock or distress, usual fertilizing times are spring and fall... but I have seen people put fertilizer down on there stressed lawns (thinking it needed the nutrients) and it burnt it out.
It depends how much lawn you have.
I can only help you out if you have a small lawn, and I recommend to just dig it up and replant seed.
For a quick lawn use "Patch Perfect". It looks skeptical, but it actually does work. I'm telling it's the best lawn seed I've ever used.
Just spread it out, lawn down some hay to protect it from the birds, and water a bit everyday. It's simple and easy, but a expensive for grass seed.
usually I will water it more time. In Malaysia, our weather are always hot . especially in May & June. There fore I will water my lawn 3 times a day. Just like human - Breakfast , lunch and dinner. and it work.
