I am making flowerbeds in front of my house. Can I mix leaf mulch into the soil before planting my bushes?

Question:How much should I add?

Answers:
It would be best to allow the leaf mulch to decompose before digging it in, but not necessary. If possible, run a rotary mower over the leaves to chop them up and then work into the soil. Add a nitrogen fertilizer as you do to offset the breakdown of nitrogen in the soil as the leaves decompose. (Do NOT use amonium sulfate or other "hot" chemical fertilizer, however. Make it an organic, decomposed nitrogen fertilizer from animal waste.)

If you discover lots of earthworms as your turn the soil, all the better as they will munch up the organic matter and produce excellent fertilizer in the process.

I do but mix it well, make sure the soil is plantable and not too much mulch...Better if it is broken down well first. Good nutrition.
Yes! I do it with every decorative garden i help my mom grow. Make sure you experiment beforehand because the soil changes the ammounts you want.
