They are tremendously expensive when trying to get enough light for something like a ready lamp, forget area lighting. They last forever though, 20.000 hours, so if you can live with the investment, and not break them, they are okay. Much more reasonable is compact fluorescent. They last 2 thousand hours, use less than 1/4 an incandescent equivalent and only cost from $1.50 to $2.50 depending on size.
Depends on what you mean by better? They typically use less power and last longer but I am not sure if LED light is better than other light sources in terms of light intensity etc...
