How can i kill bind weed without killing my plants?
Question:the roots are so deep and when i dig deep to pull root up few weeks latter up they come again! please help
Answers:
I dug them roots out to about 4-5 foot depth once. Had a few years of bindweed-free but it came back in the end ...
In theory ... every little bit of root that you break off can form a new plant.
Best way is to use a fork and dig when the soil is moist. Roots in general are easier to dislodge from damp, moist soil.
Bindweed roots are notoriously brittle too.
You could apply systemic weedkiller with a brush on the leaves. It will get taken up by the plant and kills from within.
Beond that all you can do is keep pulling.
Sometimes it pays to just loosen the soil with a fork. Look out for roots with nodules on it. Get those out and you will take a lot of the plants' reserves.

GLYPHOSATE IS GREAT IF YOU KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DOING.......
BUT IT DOESN'T SOAK INTO BARK OR NON-LEAFY TISSUE
THAT IS WHERE TRICLOPYR SHINES . ......IT CAN BE APPLIED DURING ANY SEASON , AT ANY TIME , ANYWHERE ..
HERE IS THE LESSON
ISOPROPYLAIME = GLYPHOSATE
DIETHYLAMINE = 2-4--D
TRYETHYLAMINE = TRICLOPYR
PICK THE BEST , WITH THE MOST APPLICATIONS , WITH THE , BEST LABELS .
WHY TRY AND FAIL ?
THANKS FOR BEST ANSWER
Simple answer is you can't. I have had an ongoing battle with bindweed in my garden since I bought the house 5 years ago and the only thing that stopped it for a month or two was setting light to it. But even after that it came back just as healthy. I have tried everything, i even got some commercial strength stuff from the farmer who i rent my stables from and nothing will kill it.
If anyone does come up with a solution I will be over the moon too!
Yep. Bindweed roots can go 15 feet, and they are very fragile, so it's like that mythical monster, where you cut off one head and two grow back.
Glyphosate is supposedly very effective. Apply it to new shoots that come up when they are long enough to have maybe 3-4 leaves. Wait for a sunny day, no breeze or prospect of rain, spray and leave it. It will die back in a few days to a week, but will regrow soon after. Repeat as necessary. After a couple of months, you'll have completely killed what was there, and you only have to monitor for new infestations, which you can get rid of before they get a real foothold.
But you can't just broadcast glyphosate to your garden, or you WILL kill everything. Apply carefully to only the plants you want to kill.
Pulling up bindweed will not kill it as the plant can regrow from just 1/4 inch of root. Best way is to dig out as much root as possible being careful not to break it as it is very brittle then go and buy one of the stronger systemic brushkillers and wait for new shoots to appear. As soon as the new shoots are 2 or 3 inches long apply the weedkiller with a brush, making sure that it is all well covered, then that shoot and its root will die although it will take a few days. Keep looking as it will take a good few months to eradicate the beast but you will eventually get rid of it!
It might even take longer as if the present lot has flowered and seeded as you will have to cope with the seedlings as well!
You can put a little round up in a cup and paint it on the leaves. Use the maximun rated dose. I'm guessing at least 3 ounces to a gallon
There are a couple of ways. Train the bindweed up a cane and spray with herbicide or if they are too close to your plants then get one of those glyphoste pens. Crush the leaves a little to bruise them then apply the glyph. Remember it takes 2-3 weeks to kill the plants roots so dont be tempted to rip it up when it starts to go brown but leave until the beggar is on the floor. Good luck
