A 2 inch diameter hole has appeared in an earth bank in my garden , what can it be ? do moles live on flatonly
Question:I placed small stones over the entrance to test for occupancy and these have been removed by whatever lives there, I don,t think rats live in burrows. there are no other signs of Mole activity
Answers:
Unlikely to be a mole.
Depends where you are and what the soil is like. There are all sorts of things it could be, if the hole was smaller it could be a solitary wasp but I doubt that would have moved the stones.
Leave the area alone and look for signs of debris outside the hole, you might even find small tracks. Don't block the hole though as next year you will probably find it re-used by something. Bumble bees for example nest in old mouse burrows.
Rats
could be mice, or rats?
it could be moles or gophers, put some mole pellets in the hole, maybe whatever is there will eat them
if your sure you have no moles, i think you have a rat.keep an eye on it and if you see rats put poison in a pipe and place near the hole, make sure the pipe is small , as you dont want to kill any cats.or birds.
Toads burrow.
rats. they come up anywhere my mom has had them in past they are a nightmare.
squirrels, voles, shrews.
also possibly wasps/bees.
We have similar holes and have both rats and moles but I've never seen either use these holes. The moles tend to tunnel and make mole hills and the rats tend to burrow under sheds etc. On balance I suspect the hole has been made by a rat. Get some rat poison and put it near by but in such a way birds etc can't get it - I have used a piece of pipe. Check the poison every day and keep replacing any that has been taken until none it taken. If you keep a check on it there will be no problem.
sounds like rats to me
