Johnson Grass?
Question:I live in Okc Ok and have a company that sprays my lawn for weeds but I still have what I think is Johnson grass. It is thick long blades and is taking over my lawn. How can I kill the Johnson grass without killing my bermuda grass? Thanks
Answers:
It MIGHT be Johnson grass or maybe not. Either way, the garden supply stores have chemicals that should be safe to use on Bermuda grass, but still kill the weed grasses. FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS.
Do you know what they are spraying? Ask for a label and see what they are using. Find out for sure what sort of weed you are hunting. If it is Johnsongrass, then look for it on the label, if it is not on there, it is not likely to be effective.
Johnson Grass can really be a pest in ornamental lawns. My suggestion would be to kill out the entire root zone. I would mix Round Up Herbicide in an open bucket, and using a sponge and wearing rubber gloves I would soak the sponge into the solution squeezing out the excess, wipe the blades of the Johnson Grass. This will kill the entire root zone within ten to fourteen days without hurting your Bermuda Lawn.
Hey neighbor, let the company you hired take care of it. Tell them that you want them to "wick apply round up to the Johnson grass in your lawn, Id try to be there to watch the applicator do the job. You will need to let the J grass grow to about 4-6" long so they can apply the chemical with out touching the bermuda. Killing perennial grass may be an extra charge but your lawn specialist should be better at it than you are. Also make sure you are dealing with J grass, it might be dallisgrass or even crabgrass, which would require a diferent treatment.
I live near Oklahoma City. Our last yard had a patch of Johnson grass that I spent 7 years battling (unsuccessfully). Sprayed it, dug it up, sprayed it again. I moved 2 years ago to get away from it (not really)! Please talk to your lawn-care company; here in Oklahoma we have lots of Johnson grass and they will know how to deal with it.
Live there too and I spent yesterday pulling the johson grass up out of my back yard--with the mud, it was easy. I'd say pull it up by the stems when you can, then spray what comes up again with roundup. It will kill out the bermuda you get it on, but after the johnson grass has been dead for a week, get some springs of bermuda from somewhere else in your yard and patch the spot, will be good as new in a another week's worth of rain.
