How far can you span with a length of 6x2?

Question:I want to build some raised decking in my back garden and i need to know how far apart to put the supports

Answers:
i would say support it every 3 feet to avoid any wobble.

edit: oh, i see. i have 8x2's spanning a 12 foot stream with no defelction at all. There are 3 of them at 18 inch centres with decking on top - rock solid.

so yes, i guess 6 foot for 6x2 would be ok.

about 18" for the supports
I'd opt for three feet. Most decking boards will deflect a lot with a span of 6 foot - but it does depend on the board. Check with the manufacturer...
Standard gap for floor joists is 18 inches I see no reason why decking would be more, especially if you are going to put heavy items on it.
Actually 24" would give you great support! I just bought my house a year ago and the deck on the back is huge but very poorly constructed! Fortunately my family owns their own construction outfit and put new supports every two feet! It is so sturdy now ! good luck! p.s. be sure to use deck screws and not nails!
Hi there.
It depends on the thickness too, but I would go for 18 inches if cost allows, better safe than sorry.
Good luck, Steve.
You can go 3 meters with 6X2 before you start to feel a bit of bounce. Make sure you have good enough posts.
The way to work it out is whatever your span (eg 3M) double it (to make 6) and that is the height of your timber.
so for a 2M - 4X2
3M - 6X2
4m - 8X2 etc.
