I have a holly tree that I want to grow tall but its is growing outward instead.?

Question:I had some trees removed. It was in very heavy shade, almost dark. Now it gets full sun.

Will this shrub now grow up instead of branching out?

I have no idea if its male or female.

Answers:
Shade would make it grow taller faster . You just slowed it down .;D Holly doesn't do as well in full sun as with some shade, btw . Are the leaves dark green? If so it's a shrub , ( Some variety of Ilex x meserve or I. aquifolium) & will only get so tall, with a tendency to spread faster than it grows up . If it is olive-green American Holly (Ilex opaca), it will grow into a tree, slowly.

It will eventually grow upwards, being in good light will help this.
If you want a tree to grow upwards, you need to take off the lower branches, and leave top branches. Bit like giving your tree a crew-cut.So take off most of lower branches, so trunk is fairly bare. Good Luck!
