Why is my conifer brown and dry on the inside but green on the outside?
Question:
Answers:
If your conifer is brown on the inside and green on the out then this would be normal but it could mean that the plant has suffered in it's life.
With all plants as they grow out the foliage on the inside is smothered by the lush new growth on the out and on conifers what happens is this foliage finally dies and goes brown.
On young plants though it can mean that the plant has some signs of distress in its life and the internal growth has died off due to possibly drought. You may well laugh with the summer (if you can call it that)we are having but conifers have a balled root system that is usually growing underneath a mound of growth. When it rains the conifer may well get little or even no moisture to this area.
It is always worth watering conifers even if we have had a downpour.
What you need to do is remove the dead growth from the plant and you may well find the plant may rejuvenate but don't worry if it doesn't if the outside is still lush green.
Feed regularly with a granular conifer fertiliser. A good one to use that I would recommend is VITAX Pelleted Conifer & Shrub Fertiliser which is also good for feeding Rhododendron's and other acid loving plants.
I hope this helps,

Lack of sunlight to the inner leaves.
Lack of light inside of course.
They all are when the light can't get in to the centre
Not getting enough water and may need feeding.
light isnt reaching the inside, try trimming the outside a bit and watering it
Years ago I went to a talk at the local library about shrubs and pruning them. Here is what the man that spoke said and I have always followed his advise. The inner needles/ leaves will die if they are not given sun light and when you prune your shrubs, to give them a natural softer look rather than the block cut look you should reach back to the base/ trunk of the plant and make your cut there. Do this here and there giving the sun light the ability to reach the inner parts of the shrub. Soon new growth will appear inside so when you prune always cut back into the plant with a different branch. New growth grows from the cut so if the cut is on the outside new growth appears there, blocking even more sun. I have done this ever since the talk and the shrubs never looked better. Well, until we had to remove them to have a new porch put on. :)
its probably got mites. spruce especialy get this, they eat the old groth.
