The water in my backyard pond has been black since the spring. I have tried barley pettlets and changing the?

Question:water, but nothing has helped. It is so black you can not see anything. Does anyone have any advise?

Answers:
If you have no fish or plants in it then go ahead and dose it with a gallon of household bleach (non scented). This will kill off the bacteria that's causing the blackness. It will turn cloudy white shortly after putting this in and will also contain a yellowish tint. 4 hours after adding the first dose do it again with another gallon of bleach. By the next day you should be just about crystal clear.

If you have fish, plants, wildlife in the water then you are going to have to remove the nitrites/nitrates. This means you will have to have a working biological filtration system in the pond. There are commercial types available or you can find various plans online.

is it man made or natural.if it's natural check to see if something leaked into it.if it's man made, drain it and clean it out.start fresh.if something got into a natural pond call the city or town where you live and have them test it.
