Is there anything you can do if your well is dry?
Question:I have an underground well and a pump that gives water to a sprinkler system - until today we haven't had rain for 2 months and I think the well has been dry - anything you can do when the well is dry?
Answers:
Are you sure the pump hasn't just lost it's prime? If you have a spigot coming off the pump you can re-prime it using another water source such as city water. With the pump off and the spigot open hold a flowing hose tightly up to the spigot for a few seconds then pull away and turn on the pump quickly. You may have to repeat this a few times until the pump catches its prime. DO NOT run the pump for more than a few seconds without water in it or it could be damaged. Loss of prime can be due to a defective check valve on your well that allows water in the pump to flow back down into the well when your pump is off.
U can dig deeper and start conserving water during dry spells.
You might lower or have lowered the intake for the pump if it is not at the bottom. Otherwise, a dry well is a dry well.
Our well dried up every summer when I was a kid. Just enough for household use if we were frugal. When rain began again, the water returned. Eventually we dug a deeper well.
