The lower leaves on my basil plants are yellow, and some have dark spots? What does this mean?

Question:

Answers:
The black spots or lesions on your basil leaves are often signs of a general name called; "Leaf Spot". There are several fungi/bacteria that can cause this outbreak. It usually occurs whenever there's high humidity or standing water is around. Overhead watering can spread these diseases to neighboring plants.

The safest way to control leaf spot on basil is to spray Potassium Bicarbonate. You might be able to find it at some of your specialty garden shops. I've seen it online and sold by Bonide products at their site as Bonide "Remedy";

bicarbonate;http://www.agorganics.com/products/bonid...

It is also sold under many other names such as; "Kaligreen" or "Greensense"

In the past, I've used an active ingredient called "Chlorothalonil" which is commonly found at most hardware stores to eradicate leaf spots and mildew on roses. It is safe and controlled the diseases on my basil. BUT.it isn't registered for use on basil at this time.

Hope this helps solve your problem. GOOD LUCK!
