How deep are utility lines buried?
Question:I heard cable, phone and electric lines are buried 18" deep, but I'm not sure. I need to run my sump pump over the lines and I know where they are, but not sure of the depth.
Answers:
you are probably correct as far as catv and phone but it will get expensive if you cut them call your local utilities have them make sure of the locations and carefully hand dig and expose each utility you are digging near gas and electric lines are usually deeper but these are just average depths and landscaping or leveling on your lot may have affected the depth .
Depends on where you live. Call your county utilities office to make sure. Our cable line was just under our grass and the phone line was only 8 inches deep!!
water lines are usually 18" deep depending on where you live.
call "miss utility" and they will scope and mark the utilities for you. This is free in Va.
They vary. It's always a good idea to call the utility companies before doing anything that can cause damage to their lines. They can give you advice or will often send someone out to help you locate them. It's easier than having to pay them for any damages.
The large cables should be buried at about 18 inches, smaller cables may not be. My telephone line is only 3 inches deep. It's best to know for certain. If you cause damage to a line you will be responsible to pay for any repairs and that could be very, very costly!
