What is houmous soil?

Question:I'm trying to grow lavender in the zone 7 in the Sandhills of North Carolina.

Answers:
yes, it's humus. and it's a good thing to have in your soil unless you have alkaline-loving plants, which are the minority of the plant kingdom, and lavender is not one of those. composty-mulchy soil amendments will satisfy the humus requirement.

i think it's supposed to be spelt humus. it means soil with a high concentration of undecayed plant matter.
