What is the best way to get rid of an area of unwanted grass on the lawn?

Question:I've got an area with some shrubs and plants around which I don't want grass. I've tried just pulling out the grass, as well as some store stuff that kills grass, but I'm curious what the best bet is for getting rid of unwanted grass cheaply and efficiently.
Thanks.

Answers:
There are several ways to kill grass.

Use a grass killer from a local hardware store. This will kill most weed but repeat applications may be necessary for success plus the chemicals can be toxic to children or pets.

Use a mulch. Newspapers that are a least 4-6 pages thick, grass clippings that are a least 3 inches thick. or plastic mulch.

You can use boiling water. Boil water in a kettle and immediately pour it on the unwanted weeds which will fry the roots but be careful not to pour too close to your shrubs and plants.

I think that newspaper is the cheapest way to kill unwanted grass and it is efficient; followed by boiling water.

Round-up
well, there are a lot of sprays and things that work well, such as:
Preen Weed and Grass Killer
Roundup
Yardiac
you can also find some at Lowes, Wal-Mart, probably Target, or any gardening store.
Hope this helps!
Good luck gardening!
I use several layers of news paper when i want to kill grass. Cover the grass so water and light do not get to it and it dies..Old carped cardboard wood any thing that will stop light and rain kills grass..You c an buy a form of cloth that you lay down and then cover with wood chips or stones etc..but old carpet will do that as well..If you want water to seep through I would suggest some pourous material with some form of covering like bark etc to enhance the area..
dont get roundup. they pride themslefs on not killing the grass. havent you all seen the commercial were the other leading brand has dead spots where the weeds were but roundup is perfectly green. may be fake but roundup isnt supposed to kill grass so dont use it for that
dig out the grass or most of it anyhow. Take a mixture of 1 part portland cement and 8 parts dirt. enough to lay on top at least a couple inches deep. After spreading evenly spray lightly with garden hose and tamp down. will form nice layer of packed dirt. ready for brick work.
plain and simple.

black plastic.

go to the hardware store, get some black plastic film. Like garbage bag material. Extremely cheap. stake down over the area you want to kill the grass. within a week or two, everything will be dead under there. Nothing, i repeat nothing, will grow under there.

no digging. no chemicals. and minimal cost.
One very cheap and efficient way to kill grass organically is by laying broken down cardboard boxes on it and placing rocks to hold them down.many a lawn garden has been started this way. You can also get topsoil and compost and dump on top of the cardboard and plant more flowers right away! Instant garden.
Use weed killer or make a small concrete ring around the area
You could smother the grass with a weed barrier landscaping cloth or newpaper. I have a section of a hill side that I have thrown a piece of carpet on and in about 2 months I am going to remove the carpet and plant flower bulbs all over that area. The grass will be dead so planting will be much easier. Then I need to figure out how to mulch it and not have all my mulch slide off the hill.
