How to grow grass in Arizona?

Question:I need some help i have a desert tortoise who lives in my back yard(I own him legally) and l like for him to have grass so he can graze and not depend on being fed. My only problem it is almost summer and my grass is dieing fast. any tips on how to get it to grow or reasons why it might be dieing?

Answers:
The answer above is not entirely correct.

You should not water at night-(absorption problems and also mold). Early morning is best. Do not overwater or you'll kill grass.

Do not overfertilize your lawn. Only fertilize once a year with organic compost.

Use lots of mulch and peat moss to help retain water and use less fescue and more "bermuda" type grass which is more heat tolerant.

You can contact your local university (Master Gardeners) at the coop extention near you for free advice.

I JUST REMEMBERED - Tortoise LOVE dandelions.

If it's dying, then I'm sure it's not getting enough water. Do you have a sprinkler system? I recommend watering the heck out of it at night time.
It might need - a nitrogen spray etc ?

Not always because of - lack of water.
