I use wood chips around my plants, about 2" inches thick. The chips kill off weeds and help keep the soil wet under the chips during droughts.
Taking a hoe and shaving the ground between the rows help keep weeds down, also, pulling the weeds up before they get too big.
We use lady bugs to kill off other bugs that harm our plants, also, you can pick off the bugs by hand.
For crops that birds can't hurt, put bird seed down between the rows, while birds are eating the seed, they will also eat some of the bugs.

Walmart carrys it in the garden section. In kinda a aqua spray btl. It has worked for me as well when the bugs r too stubborn
Next season before you plant, cut big plastic trash bags, so they are only one layer thick, lay them on your planint area, cover the bag in dirt and as you plant, cut holes in the bag where the plants will be. This really helps with weeds. AS for this season, happy pulling.
