Trailing plants with shallow roots?

Question:The bowl on my favorite birdbath cracked. I didn't want to get rid of the whole thing, so I filled the bowl with dirt and planted a little spotted dead nettle in it. At first, the plant seemed to do well, but it's not now. I think the roots may be cramped in that shallow bowl. Can anyone give me any ideas of trailing plants with shallow roots for zone 5 or any other ideas for a cracked birdbath? Thanks!

margarite potato vine, I have mine growing in all my pots, it is beautiful!

The surest thing would be to go buy you an artificial string of ivy and place in your bird bath..this is so real looking and you will be satisified with the look...
i have a plante that is like a bird bath in the yard. i planted some pansys and someother stuf in it but i had an idea.why not put my sider plant in there till autumn..it will look nice and my spider will grow bigger or either that or be shocked it can see day light..good luck with the bird bath. if you want you can see mine when i open my pm window.i got my whole flower garden on the window.
If it's dry , Portulaca . If it's moist , Creeping Jenny,(Lysimachia nummularia) esp the yellow-leaved form .
