I have this bug or animal in my mulch area. what could it be?

Question:its leave good size holes and it leaves feces like a small dog.
does anyone know what it could be?

Answers:
Is it rooting in the mulch or burrowing?

If it's digging on the surface, it could be a skunk or a raccoon, maybe an opossum (you don't mention where you live) the poop size is about right.

If it's burrowing, could be a ground squirrel of some sort.

If it's living under the ground a mole, gopher, pocket gopher, vole, shrew...but all of these would dig tunnels and the ground would be collapsible where the tunnel runs. Not sure about their poop.

On a smaller note, Japanese Beetles have large shrimp sized larvae and they live in compost and mulch piles here in California. The holes would be quite a bit smaller though...they can be treated with insecticide or possibly with nematodes. Not sure about their poop either.

A raccoon. Or a skunk. Probably digging for grubs or worms.
SOUNDS LIKE A RACCOON
