How often and with what do you water your lawn/yard?
Question:Despite the fact that I work, I try to give my yard a quick water every other day, and I make sure to soak the grass pretty decent so it'll last. I use just a plain ol' hose with no nozzle or anything. I don't like sprinklers because to me they don't cover the ground good. What do you do?
Answers:
I have a sprinkler/irrigation system that I can turn on and off or use an automatic timer. I prefer not to use the timer. A quick water every other day with just the hose will not provide good conditions for strong roots in grass. There are many types of sprinkler heads and they do a good job covering the ground. Many sprinklers will also cover a large area. Just turn it on for about 45 minutes twice a week and that should be good. Set a kitchen timer to remind you when to move the sprinkler. Easy to do - even after work.
we get a lot of rain, so this is mostly in the summer when it never gets much hotter than 95F. I soak the lawn once a week so that the sprinklers fill a 1" deep tuna can. this gets the water all the way down to bottom of the roots, and allows the soil to get warm on the other days so the grass can grow its best.
Ya water the grass too much--once a week is good. I have an irragation system. Trust me it is not cheap to install. You are doin just fine with the hose and water.
This site may be of some help. Good luck!

put in a irrigation system with a timer set for every other day
if you are receiving less than 1 inch of water per week, a thorough soaking is good. a light watering every day causes plants to develp shallow roots instead of growing down to get to water sources
since you work invest in a timer and set it up it will give you more time and a nice lawn
I have an irrigation system and water once a week for 20 minutes each station. The system cost $1500 to put in and was worth every penny. Saves on the water bill and also on energy, dragging around the hoses and sprinkler!!
I rely on rain for the most part unless we go through a drought I then use a sprinkler in the early AM or early evening. You need to water for about an hour for it to be effective.
Use a rain shower head if you insist on using the hose.
Once every 2-3 days is sufficient for the most part.
Unless it is really dry and no dew in the mornings, water every other day.
Best to use an irrigation system though. After you have used one, you never go back.
