What Tree should I buy to replace the tree I had to have cut down?

Question:I had a very old (over 100 years old) SIlver Maple tree in my back yard. It was damaged by a terrible ice storm we had last winter and I had to have it cut down. I am now wanting to plant another tree, but I'm not sure what to buy. I would love it if anyone who knows trees well could give me some ideas? I would like something fast growing, hearty, tall and a good shade tree. I live in St. Louis, Missouri. I would plant it on the west side of my house (afternoon sun). Thanks!

Answers:
I am also looking for a tree like this. For me, it's hard to find all the features I want.

Fast-growing trees tend to be weaker. Here's a website for fast-growing trees:

But the site says nothing about how strong the trees are.

Here is a site that has a lot of posts asking for advice about trees. You might have better luck getting experienced advice there.

Red-bud maples seem to be popular on this site, from what I saw.

Good luck!

umbrella trees are beutiful, thats what i want.
An Elm tree or Russian Olive.
Here are a couple to look at

Autumn Purple Ash - Kinda fast growing, strong wood, very nice in the fall.

sad to hear that you lost your Silver Maple, they are very beatiful trees. There are soooo many tree's that you can choose from. You can search the web,for what you are looking for.Or better yet go to a local nursery, they should put you in the right direction. but rembemer to look at what the tree will look like when mature.Don't plant to close to a building, or under powerlines etc.
Hello Liz.. As a former professional tree & shrub spray tecnician, one of the most hardiest trees as far as insect damage and disease resistance I have seen is the "sweetgum" tree (liquidamber styraciflua). I never had to treat a sweetgum tree for insects or disease! It virtually had none of either..It is a medium to fast grower with a heighth up to 60 - 75 feet tall. It has a 45 foot spread as well, so will provide plenty of shade to block the hot afternoon sun. It is one of the prettiest autumn trees around, with its leaves changing to an orange, purple, yellow, and red before dropping in the fall. It is a little messy with all the leaves and the round seed balls in the fall, but well worth the mess in what you receive as far as its performance in your landscape goes. Here is a link with some pics and growing info on the sweetgum. Hope this answers your question, and good luck with what ever tree you choose.
