I live in Spokane Wa, what is the best type of lawn grass for the area and why?

Question:I currently have bent grass

Answers:
Living in Spokane, you have two extreme weather conditions. Winters are very cold, and summers are somewhat hot and dry. The former weather condition, throws out the possibility of having a warm season grass. The best choice for your area is a cool season grass.. Your best grasses for the "inland" Northwest are:

1.) Kentucky Bluegrass. This grass likes sunny areas and is somewhat drought tolerant. It withstands heavy use and heat, but requires more fertilizing and watering to keep it healthy and green.

2.) Turf Type Tall Fescue. This grass is drought resistant, wear resistant, and shade tolerant.

3.) Perennial Ryegrass. This grass is extremely wear resistant, quick to germinate, and should be mixed with Kentucky Bluegrass. Perennial Rye is good for only 2 or 3 years, this is why it should be mixed with another variety for a nice turf.

4.) Bentgrass. This is another good grass for the Northwest, and many golf courses in the area use this grass for greens and fairways. Its fairly drought tolerant but requires a little more watering to keep green in the heat of summer. It's always a good thing to mix with a couple other varieties for best results.

What I would recomment for you, is to get a grass seed mix that has 2 or 3 different varieties all in one bag. It's alway best to have different varieties in case a disease or fungus attacks one variety, you still have the other 2 or 3 to keep your lawn looking good until the disease can be dealt with, such as applying a fungicide. Hope this answers some of your questions.... Good Luck

I live in WA. and landscape in my off time from the Navy. I would recommend Ky. Bluegrass. It is both rain and drought tolerant. It will require some watering during real dry periods. Good Luck.
