Are you thinking of the "Montauk Daisy" ? my grandma used to have those all around her house on Long Island before she died.
Mum or chrysanthemum come to mind.
My shasta's bloom a second time in the fall. Other than a shasta, I would think the answer is a gerbera, although they are usually a color other than white with yellow center.
