My cantaloupes are the biggest, sweetest I've ever grown, other than all the rain what could cause this?
Question:I have e few more that are rotting, but the ones that are good, are great. They are as sweet as sugar and just absolutely succulent. I don't know if I'll ever grow 'em this good again. What makes such a good crop with good quality?
Answers:
With melons, it is usually best to grow in "new" soil. Soil that hasn't been gardened much, or at all. If this is not the case with you then it might be related to variety. Did you use a different variety? If not... then it probably is the rain. Nothing makes a garden flourish like a healthy dose of rain! To cure the rott get them off the ground. There are elaborate ways of doing this but a cheap solution is to set a piece of cloth down and lay smooth pebbles on top of it. Then simply set your melons on this. They will stay dry and be less likely to rott. Happy "meloning"!
Did you use commercial, growing soil? It is already enriched with fertilizers. Maybe the seeds you used?
Count your blessings, I am trying cantaloupes again after a failed season last year!
