A fun thing for kids to do is grow a sweet potato in water - you put four toothpicks in the sides of the tuber, suspend the bottom half of it in a jar of water and watch it grow. But it doesn't grow like an ordinary potato plant, it turns into a vine that creep as much as ten feet away. Do sweet potatoes grow like vines when they are planted in the field? I don't know, because I've never seen one growing in a field. But I would suspect they take up more space than ordinary potatoes, just because of the way they grow hydroponically.
