Any good composte. You can make it yourself, some you turn over a few times every couple days, some you have to turn it with a shovel. Food scraps, peels, coffee grounds, leaves.
We put everything from banana peels to coffee grounds in the compost bin provided at little cost from the city of Pasadena.

If you can get to a natural garden center, they have great green products that are safe to use with children and pets. The Natural Gardener in Austin is one great nursery that was close to my former home.
There are several sources of good natural fertilizers. Actually wood ashes from a wood stove or brush fire is a good source of potassium and of course thier is the old horse or couw manure which is stocked full of all nutrients amaginable and you can purchase these after the composting process and this takes the stink out of it. ALso a neat source of Nitrogen for plants and hit quick is to take normal Ammonia you can buy in the household cleaner section of your local store and mix 1 part ammonia to 3 parts water and then use a spray bottle to mist it onto your plants as a foliar feed. ( only do this late in the evening as sun is going down as if done in the heat of the day it may cause some foilage burn. Remember however that in most plants nitrogen is needed to sustain growth but over use will lead to more foilage growth and less fruiting of vegetable plants.
Epsom salts are great for roses.
