Growing Pumpkins...?
Question:I planted last years pumpkin guts in my yard and now I have pumpkin plants galor.
How do I get a lot of pumpkins to grow big and strong for this year?

u want only one flower bloom so it plant can focus its energy to that one pumpkin

i don't know about growing in the high desert but i do know a little about growing pumpkins. if you pinch off some of the blooms you will get fewer pumpkins but they will be bigger than if you leave all the blooms on. also, pumpkins need water so don't let them get too dry. if you have a problem with mold or damp ground that may cause rot put straw under the pumpkins so they aren't damaged. i doubt if you have that kind of problem in the desert. try going to a gardening web site for information particular to your climate. good luck.
You must be careful not to pick too many of the flowers as some are the male and some are the female. They need each other to make the pumpkin. I would wait till the pumpkin started to form and then keep the largest ones and snip off the smaller ones. Once the pumpkins have grown to a reasonable size and you feel you have enough then cut the stems from the other runners that lead to the main root. Careful not to cut the wrong stems.
As the plants get bigger , try thinning them out so they will have room to grow, or take a few of them and plant them in another area.Pumpkin plants will spread out very big, so give them some room.
All good advice so far. Also, turn the young pumpkins every other day or so - being careful not to break the vine. Stop turning when then get to 5-6 pounds.
Make sure that you thin them out so the plants aren't all bunched up.
You can plant the ones that you thin out any place that you have available.
Try manure or compost. those are nice organic ways to give plants nutrients.
