I need to move some sod to expand the garden. I need to reuse the sod. Any inexpenxive suggestions?

Question:I need to reuse the sod so I need to know how deep to dig under the grass and the steps necessary to preserve the grass. What are the best approaches to use short of renting an expensive machine?

If the grass is centipede, you can take a square point shovel and cut the grass just below the root which should be about 2 inches deep. I suggest wetting the area first. This will soften the dirt and aid the dirt in sticking to the grass roots. After removing the correct amount, place the dug grass in a shady area and keep moist until you are ready to replant. Grass needs plenty of water during the hot months. A sod buster is a machine that works really well in cutting up grass if you decide to rent instead of using a shovel. Rent is usually around 45 dollars per day. It is very fast and easy to use.
