Answers:
Oh boy... I really don't see too many animals stealing potatoes without leaving obvious evidence around... So it could be people...

Hum... Can they cage them? Put them in chicken wire, and bury it deep in the soil?

Or best yet, tell them to write a sign that reads: We know you needed them, and took them. We do not mind sharing. But unfortunately, I have to warn you that radioactivity has been detected in our soil, and you have been eating contaminated potatoes.

If they have farm animals, circle the field in their crap. Dig a few holes as traps, and cover them loosely with hay >:-D

is there no possibility that it is animals? cause they are easier to stop. but booby traps in general would be good. trip wire hooked up to a light or something
Maybe it's an animal. Not sure what exactly would be digging up potatoes, but our neighbors dog use to get in our garden and dig up our carrots...and eat them!!

Why not inform the local authorities of this issue? Maybe they can be of assistance. Or you could always have your friends place a tall barbed wire fence around their potato patch and see if this doesn't thwart the theives.
get shotguns and patrol the areas and when you see someone trying to steal them shoot them in their legs or in the face, or tell them to fu.ck off
Fence it off and put a couple rottweilers in their should do the trick if not two german shepards
