Why arent my gladioli flowering?
Question:it's mid / late July. it's hot. They're not in full sun all day but it's not dark.some are in the shade I'll admit...but even the sunnier ones arent flowering. There's just the long leaves :-(
Answers:
1. Too much nitrogen (fertilizer) can cause gladoli to produce more greenery and less flowers.
2. Gladoli often do not bloom the first season they are planted. Mine took 2 summers to bloom when I moved them.
3. Older gladoli (over 6 years old) may lose their vigor and stop blooming.
3. Gladoli like some sun (as you already know).
4. Gladoli like moist soil; they need 1 inch of water per week.
5. Your gladoli corms (bulbs) should be planted 5-6 inches deep.
6. Gladoli like some fertilizer in the form of organic matter (such as compost). I add a little rotted cow manure to mine every spring. Not too much--they don't bloom with too much nitrogen!
you probably planted them in the wrong season
My Glads are just starting to produce flower spikes. Some of them haven't started yet. It might just be that it is not time yet. Up here in the NC Mtns you have to plant them later in the spring since all danger of frost has to be passed before planting them. I didn't plant mine until like the 2nd and 3rd weeks of May, Give them alittle more time and just to let you know.more water produces more leaves not more flowers. Don't overwater. I normally don't water at all if we get alittle shower or two a week but if we don't then I water a couple times a week in the early morning. Most of mine are in full sun but I do have a few that are in some shade during the day and they bloom but just alittle later then the ones in the sun.
Hang in there.they will bloom soon most likely.
